Bubblegun

Bubblegun are, if you believe their own hype, the next best thing. From Bangor their self-avowed aim is to make their music “short, concise, lively, fun, but above all, radio-friendly”, to make music with “joysticks, keypads, levers, screens” and “to look like giraffes in stilettos, shrink-wrapped in silver foil, glowing like plutonium”. We pinned down head bod David Wrench to ask him, just what the hell are you talking about?

Bangor, in Wales. Immortalised in the laverly song Didn’t we have a laverly time...the day we went to Bangor, by some woman Mavis remembers who had long brown hair and on the video on top of the pops cavorted around in a flouncy green dress on the beach and a bicycle. Not, then, a hotbed of culture, or music, or very much at all really, apart from being in Wales. In which case, Dave Wrench must be on to a good thing. He submitted thusly to our in-depth Mavis email grilling.

- Name one thing you would like to take with you on a railway journey to Swindon.

A return ticket.

- Write three words in a foreign language (Welsh though doesn't count, sorry, as it's not strictly speaking foreign.)

Nous somme les dieu du pop

- There are, apparently, three degrees of separation from Bubblegun to Ginny Lathanby, of 16 Mill Close, Derby. Give them.

bubblegun phone line www phone line ginny

- Think of a number. Now double it. Add 17, multiply by three, and divide by two. What's the total, and what relationship does it have to an infinite amount of men in gorilla outfits?

the answer is infinity, and so the relationship is obvious.

- Who would you most like to be in a band with, and in what era of rock?

I'd like to be in a band with Sparks at the turn of the 17th century.

- XTC come from Swindon. Ever had stage fright?

no

- In fifty words EXACTLY, tell us why we should buy your records.

because they rock rock rock rock rock rock rock rock rock rock rock rock rock rock rock rock rock rock rock rock rock rock rock rock rock rock rock rock rock rock rock rock rock rock rock rock rock rock rock rock rock rock rock rock rock rock rock rock!

- Bubblegun seem to have a very clear idea of where they're going. Would you like to be as big as, say, Steps, and would you ever consider working with Pete Waterman and his trains? certainly.

Trains? we're a futuristic band we travel by jetpack and monorail.

- Put another way, in 2001 can you imagine a whole lot of Bubblegun clones clogging up the upper end of the charts while you travel with Lolly on a double-headed tour of the far east in your year out of the country for tax reasons?

I should certainly hope so.

- Is the Nabob of Nylon another way of saying you don't like ironing?

Nylon is a fantastic material, as you say, no ironing, you get static shocks, and it's see through, what more do you want?

- Ever created a tune on a Nintendo Gamepad? Would you ever think of trying?

Can you do that? cool!

- If you could date anyone in history, who would it be?

it would be a menage et trois with the Marquis de Sade and Britney Spears.

- What do you reckon about Sigue Sigue Sputnik? In an underogatory way, I reckon there's some common ground.

yes we do see the similarity, other than the fact that we've got some songs.

- "Bubblegun releases will be made available in many languages". Which ones, and will you be aiming for the Hungarian domestic market to rival Horace Horacz, king of the cossack crooners?

no market will be left untouched by the bubblegun produkt.

- Mavis's celebrity grapple-fest. Who would win the following bouts, and why?

Elvis Costello vs Elvis Presley there's only one elvis. Billy Corgan vs Michael Stipe billy who? Millwall vs West Ham no idea, incidently, bubblegun plan to abolish sport by the year 2005. The Goombay Dance Band vs Primal Scream the goombay dance band, as they're a lot more inventive.

- When you play your next gig are these questions going to be projected on the wall? probably

- Is the gloomy old David Wrench of the Blow Winds Blow era now more optimistic? Is it a millennium thing?

it's a natural progression. Blow winds blow was about life being pointless, and without meaning, and the natural conclusion of that is just to enjoy life, and not worry about stuff. Hence BUBBLEGUN.

- Will you please charge me up with nylon love?

yes, here goes........ was it good for you?
