God's Puzzle is scheduled to have its international (i.e., outside-of- Japan) première at this year's
Vancouver International Film Festival (VIFF) on September 25th, and to subsequently be screened there on September 26th.
Here's a description of
God's Puzzle from the VIFF website: "In the years since we introduced Miike Takashi with his debut feature
Shinjuku Triad Society--and went on to give
Audition its world premiere--there have been reasons to fear that his adrenaline levels were dropping. Only the occasional movie (such as
Ichi the Killer,
Izo or
Big Bang Love - Juvenile A) maintained his earlier standards of aesthetic depravity and cultural vandalism. But this one is a zinger. Never shy of tackling the big issues, Miike here explains quantum physics--through the stories of an embittered woman genius and a laddish male idiot, the latter of course impersonating his clever twin brother while he's away searching for spiritual truths in India. ¶ You don't need a story outline, do you? Let's just say that the universe boils down to 73% dark energy, 23% dark matter and 4% matter, and the fundamental question is: is it possible to create anti-matter? And if it is, would that spark a new universe? And if it did, would that destroy this one in the process? And what would become of the best sushi in the universe then? The mix of low comedy, high theory, sex, puddles and really quite spectacular special effects will certainly make your particles accelerate."
