I'm a Cyborg, but that's OK (S.Korea 2006)
Hmmm I'm surprised this movie hasn't been discussed before coming from Park Chan-Wook (Joint Security Area, Vengence Trilogy, etc). If it has been discussed, please delete/move this topic because the search would eliminate most of the words from the title
Anyway, I'm a Cyborg, but that's OK ( aka Saibogujiman Kwenchana) is supposedly a dark romantic comedy set in a mental hospital of some sort with some violent scenes thrown in, starring Lim Soo Jeong and Rain. Here's the synopsis:
Quote:
|
After attempting suicide, Young Goon (Lim Soo Jung) ends up in an asylum, outfitted with retro accessories, concerned doctors, and plenty of quirky patients. Young Goon's problem? She thinks she's a cyborg. Her bigger problem? A cyborg can't eat human food. Refusing to eat, she spends all her rapidly depleting energy communicating with her machine friends (like the coffee vending machine), plotting against the doctors, and trying to recharge herself with batteries. The cute and quirky Young Goon immediately attracts the attention of asylum mate Il Soon (Jung Ji Hoon), a young man with a knack for stealing. He can steal anything, even Thursday, and his specialty is stealing other people's skills. Recognizing that Young Goon is in trouble, the love-struck Il Soon tries his hardest to help her eat again, bringing both of them onto a path of romance and healing.

The director behind the movie is almost enough to make me see this. However, after seeing the first trailers for the movie a long time ago, I have decided not to. It's not for me. It looks and sounds bad.

Some time ago I read a German review of the film which discribed it as something like "David Lynch directing One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest as a romantic comedy".
Sounds good enough for me to give the DVD a try.

Even if it wasn't directed by Park Chan-Wook I would still really want to see it. I mean... the summary alone... there's no way I wouldn't want to see this movie. I love movies with odd romances in them .

I’m A Cyborg, But That’s Okay (2006)
Korean Romantic Comedy
Su-jeong Lim (star of A Tale of Two Sisters) is a mental patient who thinks she’s a cyborg in this outrageous film by Chan-wook Park. She develops a relationship with another patient who thinks he can steal anything, including people’s character traits. What follows is perhaps the most outlandish romantic comedy in existence. Fortunately, the characters do not simply act crazy for the sake of being crazy – the storyline is quite detailed in its building relationships between different character delusions. The cinematography is stunning, providing a fantasy-like feel during certain scenes, and the film in general bleeds originality on a minute-by-minute basis. The showstopper is when Su-jeong loses her “sympathy” – you’ll know when it happens.
There's simply no question in my mind that Su-jeong Lim is my favorite actress on the face of the planet, and Chan-wook Park is high on my list of favorite directors. He went out on a limb with this one, and made a great film.
See this movie as soon as humanly possible.

I'm totally late in replying here but I caught this movie at a festival recently (yay big screen!) and it was absolutely fantastic. Chan-Wook's idiosyncracies make the drama so much more interesting than it would be played straight. His keen and particular portrayal of the little things in life really hit the idea of the movie a home run -- that we may all be a little crazy but we must be at peace with ourselves regardless. I HATE romantic comedies. I loved this one for it's freaky-deaky look at things.
The ending's a bit weird though, admittedly.

I just watched this last night and really, really enjoyed it. I am by no means a fan of romantic comedies but I sure liked this one. The characters were well drawn and sympathetic even though they were so terribly damaged. There were a couple of scenes that were so heartwarming (did I just say that) and somehow sad at the same time.
Visually this looks more like Chan-wook Park's Cut than any of the "revenge trilogy" films. Very funny film at times as well.
I guess the bottom line is that I fell asleep last night w/ a smile on my face and that's never a bad thing.

Glad to hear you enjoyed it BigFo I've not seen it myself yet, but I've read Tyler's glowing review of it (which will soon be uploaded, it's 99% ready) and the screencaps look awesome, visually it looks very appealing from what I've seen - I will have to make time to sit down for this one

I saw this movie last year I believe. Strange, def not horror. I think i heard about it from Classic Rock magazine, the UK one.
The movie was strange, which is to be expected. I neither hated nor liked it.

Ugh, Tartan have seen fit to take off the bit of the title they don't like as usual *cough Sympathy for Lady Vengeance* so now it's just going to be known as I'm A Cyborg: http://www.im-a-cyborg.co.uk/ is going to be their subsite but all it has currently is a poster, let's hope they put up some more stuff there...
