Pulse (US Kairo remake)
I don't believe it can be compared to the Ring series: that's a pretty daft thing for Harvey Weinstein to say, since it is - and always was - a standalone piece. (Well, unless you count it as the third part of a philosophical and nominal 'trilogy' with Cure and Charisma as parts 1 & 2, as some people have speculated that was Kurosawa's intention...)
*** SPOILER ***
How could you make a franchise out of a single completely-rounded work ending in apocalypse and the almost complete wipeout of humanity? *stumped*
*** END SPOILER ***
It's not as though there's original material to carry it forward or anything! Weinstein is an idiot
This would be one remake I simply would refuse to see. So far I've given everything else a fair viewing, but this... I couldn't, I really couldn't bear it. That's just my feeling on it: Kairo means a lot to me and so I couldn't stomach it.

As much as it makes me want to vomit, I'll still probably go and see it. Fffff, I'm so mad that they are going to re-do "A Tale of Two Sisters" but for some reason I am DRAWN to go see it, I HAVE to see it just so I can be mad ! It doesn't make sense.

It makes very much sense. Because remakes have a small chance of being good, and if you haven't seen the film, you can't complain about how they should've done something differently, or leave it out, or add it. So it does make sense. It's weird though.

While it's true that Kairo dose not lend itself to being a franchise the chances of a pg13,bottom line fed, remake reaching the same bleak conclusion are slim.

Great. Can't wait to see this one. Something, well, EVERYTHING, tells me that the remake will be much, much different than the original. Kairo is a very slow, subtle, creepy film, and I don't think American audiences would appreciate it very much. I wouldn't be surprised if the remake resembles fear.com more than Kairo God help us all

My predictions on the remake:

I read a while ago that the Kairo remake idea was dropped, not sure how true that is though.

Oh man really?, I always try and give a remake the benefit of the doubt but even I think Kairo should be the line that Hollywood doesn't cross.
Then again maybe they will suprise us or more like that is what I'm hoping for

On the "how could they make a franchise out of it question."
I agree it's a horrible sign, but it could be done. Romero's pulled it off with the Dead films - kind of a meta-franchise, where no characters get carried over, the timeline gets bumped forward, things get worse and worse, and there's a new thematic focus from film to film.
Don't see them taking that route, though.
It is kind of funny that the remake originally got axed for being too similar to Ring, and now it's being revived and touted as being similar to Ring. (And just after the Weinsteins start up a new company too, hmm.)

An interesting comparison Chryse, however, the ending of KAIRO essentially comes to the same conclusion as DAY OF THE DEAD. Romero's trilogy is basically three acts of the same film.

Apparently Ian Somerhalder (AKA Boone from Lost) has been added to the cast, and shooting will begin in Romania this summer. Such a bad feeling about this...

I just found this plot outline posted on the imdb forums for Kairo and gets worse imo.

Pulse centers on a group of college students who discover that a computer hacker friend of theirs unwittingly pirated a strange wireless signal that opened a doorway for a terrifying evil to cross over into the world. As it spreads, everyone in its path is consumed, and the students must race to find a way to stop it.

If accurate then it sounds like normal collage kid horror trash to me

I think this movie's already been released, and wasn't it called Flatliners?

Sorry Troika - I absolutely couldn't resist it. Even the synopsis sounds dire - "the students must race to find a way to stop it"?
*** MILD SPOILAGE ***
I mean, surely part of the point of Kairo was that people didn't want to stop it - that they almost all to a man acceded and surrendered to the overwhelming depression and self-destruction that was coming out of the site?
*** END SPOILAGE ***
It sounds like a cross between Final Destination and War Games

It's pretty sad if that's what they can come up with with such a great original movie.

*nods* That's what depresses me too. It's like, how can we reduce this astonishingly dark and strange arthouse-type horror movie to its lowest common denominator so we can get the kiddiwinks into the cinemas?
In that regard The Ring didn't stoop too low and at least retained some of its dignity, but this... if I were Jewish I'd be throwing up my hands and saying "Oy vey!" about now
