Default Death Note

I hadn't seen a link on this yet, and saw that it came out on DVD in Japan this month.

It looks interesting, at least. Here is the website. I hope if someone sees it or has more info (and I will investigate, too) they post more

What? DVD already? I thought it was released in cinemas just 1-2 weeks ago?
Ah well, the earlier the merrier for us.

The trailer does look good - most of the characters were cast correctly, they look just like the manga counterparts, except for maybe the lead(Light)
I seem to recall something about it being well received and doing good business, which sounds promising.

The movie looks good but I just can't get into the Manga, I own volumes 1-5 but have only read the first 2.

Light's character actually puts me off reading the rest.

I apologize...I saw the article in the Japanese mag "DVD Vision" and made the assumption it was the DVD release. The movie came out in Japanese theaters on June 17th.

Well isn't this exciting. While I have yet to get around to the manga, I have several friends who are absolutely crazy about it. I'm all excited now

I spoke to a friend in Japan and she is excited about it, too. Apparantly it is in 2 parts, and this is the first part (whether each is a complete story or split in half, I don't know). Part 2 comes out later in the fall. Harmcore, do you know if they are standalone movies, (like Back to the Future I and II) or are they one story in two parts?

Looking at the website and trailer, it seems ready made for an international release... The title and trailer are (mostly) in English, and there is no spoken dialogue. The website navigation and intro are in English....interesting.

If it follows the manga, the second one should be a direct continuation of the first one, but there is a certain.. difference that makes it sensible to split the story in two films.
I suspect I'll enjoy the first film more, but I'm looking forward to both.

I've begun the manga, and I can't put it down! I'm SO excited for this. I'm a little worried about the special effects in the shinigami department though. I hope they don't look cheesy. I'd love to see Ryuk's make-up done by the guy behind Long Dream

I'm excited for this too. I'm half-way through the manga and it's a little addicting, it's definitely hard to put down.... I'm liking it so far.

As for the shinigami in the movie, I'm not too worried about it although there is a quick CG-looking shot of Ryuk at the very end of the trailer. Hmm....

And Troika, I can understand your dislike for Light. He does seem pretty ruthless with the killing ( 50 names is a lot for five days ). Although I was under the impression that he wasn't really like that, but instead that the death note was making him that way. He mentions something about it making the owner want to use it very early on... Just my opinion though.

I think Light is just too smart for his own good, and he's gotten carried away. He really does have good intentions, he's just lost sight of his goal because of his itense competition with L. It's a wonderful story... so many dimensions.

Wow, was the movie-version really that successful?

http://imdb.com/title/tt0810827/

I'm really excited now

EDIT: I just watched the trailer again, and I'm a little underwhelmed.... There's just something not right about it. Still want to see it, just there is something weird about the trailer....

AKK! Someone posted screen shots of Ryuk on imdb:

I think he looks good, although he's obviously CG.

He looks pretty good, but I bet he won't when he moves. But it could be worse, I guess. It don't know how I feel about Shuya Nanahara being Light. He's a good actor, but not quite... Light.

That's exactly what went through my head when I first saw the trailer. I mean, he's a good actor and all, but I just don't think he's the right person to play Light. I was thinking of alternative actors earlier today, and Kato Haruhiko popped into mind- although then it hit me he wouldn't suit the role either. And he's far too old to play a senior in high school too

Not by Japanese moviemaking standards Remember, Sadao Abe played the supposedly thirteen-year-old Mitsuru Yamaguchi in Uzumaki at the tender age of... thirty. And Masanobu Ando and Taro Yamamoto were a fair bit older than high school age when they wore uniform for BR So Haruhiko Kato sounds like a good suggestion to me

I thought Tatsuya Fujiwara's Nanahara in BR was OK - fairly balanced in the way that he was meant to be 15 or so, so the performance had to reflect that. But let's not talk about BRII...

Speaking of Masanobu Ando, I think he'd make an excellent Light.
