Has anyone yet brought this next Takashi Miike movie up, Chakushin ari (aka You've Got A Call)? If not, then this'll be as much news to you as it was to me - a huge thank you to Tommy Bergskold for emailing me (his Japanese friend Miyuki mentioned it to him) about it
Anyway, it stars Kou Shibasaki, Fukiichi Kazue and Tsutsumi Shinichi, it's in post-production right now and is due for Japanese cinematic release in 2004. I just watched the trailer and ... guess what? It looks like a mixture of all of the following: Ju-on: The Grudge, Phone, Ring, Dark Water, Kairo... add your own recent J-ghost flick here...
Anybody worried that Takashi-san might have been spreading himself a little... thin lately?
Here's the URLs for the official site, and for the trailer too:

Looks like a lot of Ju-on in this one....and that's not a bad thing. Looking forward to it.

This was completed last year i think, it was a studio production that was released in the cinema earlier this year - i think it did well with the film providing a cliche riddled opening that makes way for an apparently terrifying final 30 mins set in an abandoned hospital, during which you pretty much get hit by the usual deranged miike madness.
im hoping its gonna be a good one (dvd shouldnt be long now - probably in the next 2 months with any luck), definately looking forward to Zebraman though.

It does feel like it's been a long time since a new Miike has been available outside of Japan... but I am looking forward to both these movies (Zebraman mostly for Sho Aikawa).

One Missed Call
I noticed this on yesasia and wanted to know if anyone knew if it would be released in the UK or out on dvd with English subtitles sometime? It is directed by Takashi Miike and stars Kou from Battle Royale. It looks like it's a horror movie so could be good as Takashi Miike has made some pretty good movies.

I want to see this film very soon but it still seems unlikely they are going to sell it cheaper then 75 dollars right now. As thats what I believe the price is on yeasia that I think is english subtitled. Kou is a great actress and I really hope to see more of her work. I really don't want to wait for Tartan to release it as their subtitles never match what the people are really saying it seems.

I watched Chakushin ari a couple days ago. Actually I was a little disappointed cos I expected more innovations from Miike. Shibasaki Kou was ok as lead actress.
Having seen Juon, Ring etc I pretty much knew what to expect. If you are not yet sick and tired of female ghosts with long black hair, you might actually enjoy it.

This one's currently on the big screen in Sweden... Only, it's a limited release and therefor it is (of course) not showing in my city.

Yeah, those are the bad sides of living in a fairly small city. I can speak of my own experiences. Of course if I paid extra money for travels, then I'd be able to catch almost everything landing here. But for one movie, it'll have to be something really special.

"Kadokawa Pictures has announced the production of One Missed Call 2, a sequel to the Takashi Miike horror hit that grossed 13.6m in Japan earlier this year and has since been screened in nearly 30 countries around the world. The new film, however, will have a new director, TV veteran Renpei Tsukamoto, and a new lead actress, Mimura, a twenty-year-old newcomer in her first starring role.
In the previous film Ko Shibasaki starred as a college student whose friends begin getting strange messages on their mobiles from three days in the future - and dying on exactly the hour and minute the messages are dated. Then, she gets a similar message -- and realises she has only three days to prevent a gruesome end. In the new film, scheduled for a February 5, 2005 release by Toei, Mimura plays a day care teacher who receives a tune on her mobile prophesying her own death. Her mother, a fan of horror novels, dismisses her fears, saying "I’m used to scary stuff." The film then proceeds to prove her wrong. Principal photography started on August 18 at Toei’s Tokyo studio."

<Spoiler warning don't read unless you've seen it>
well I watched One Missed Call last night and got to say its another great film from the mighty miike but let down so badly by one of those fake endings which us movies do so often,,,its still highly worth the view as its got some heartpounding creepy moments,,its also been miikes biggest hit at home cinema wise so its done something right just hope it doesnt change him into a more safe less extreme director,,,ohh and who after watching this wont be d/l the ring tone
I'd give it a very fine [7.out of.10] can't wait for zebraman and three, monster now

"Fake endings"...? Would you mind explaining that a little deeper?
I've seen it, and I thought it was awesome. It wasn't scary, but it was a bit twisted at times (litterally).

I think the fake ending is that ....
*** SPOILER ****
The mother isnt really the evil force and so the body in the hospital really has no relevance as the mother isnt the curse. So in hindsight that ending doesnt really make sense in the grand scheme of things - if the daughter is the cause of the curse then the whole hospital scene and the use of the mother as an angry spirit means nothing at all. Its just one big red herring.
*** END OF SPOILER ***

Oh that... Thought he meant the absolute final scene.
Actually, I didn't mind that. Although it did make the movie a bit at first, IMO.

HK DVD (being distributed by Garry's Trading... now who's that? ) is coming out (according to DDDHouse) 28.09.2004. It should have English subs, 16:9 image, DD5.1 & DTS and region code 3. Good news!
