so has anyone here seen it?
it was made between Tetsuo and Tetsuo II and was a commercial failure for Tsukamoto, it flopped badly as it didnt connect with the cyberpunk fans and failed to establish that same nightmarish vision of body horror that his incredible debut executed so brilliantly.
well - after much fears of how bad it was going to be i sat down and have to admit enjoyed the hell out of it. feels like a horror comedy adventure, a twisted love child of "Amazing Stories", "Tales From The Crypt" and Junji Ito (hiruko's deep cavern feels like it jumped off the page from Uzumaki only at the cost of £2.50 to construct ) not the best film in the world - far from it but not due the criticism it was given.
a review for you nice folks can be found here
enjoy

I have seen Hiruko and I enjoyed it quite a bit. I was only interested in Hiruko because I was blown away by Tetsuo when I saw it 10 years ago. It is quite a departure from his usual style, but it certainly has a B-movie charm going for it. I had heard that Tsukamoto did it (director for hire) to raise money for Tetsuo II. Have you seen 'Gemini'? If so, what did you think? I have been wanting to pick it up for awhile.

Gemini is superb - excellent film. Based on an Edogawa Rampo story. Great acting, camerawork and sound the film is grotesque and exquisite all at the same time.
Im struggling with a review for Gemini - been ages since i started writing it. Can't quite get the right tone for the review. Regardless - highly recommended.

What reason can you think of for people to hate this so much? Other than it not being Tetsuo, does it have any lethal flaws? This thread is the first time I've heard anything good about it... and you do make it sound fun.

Hiruko
Hiruko the Goblin is a great movie. It feels a lot like the Evil Dead series, or the Phantasm series. Just enough horror to make you want to dim the lights and just enough camp to warrant repeat viewings.

It sounds like fun to me. I love Tsukamoto, and I love campy horror... it sounds like this one is right up my alley

I just watched this movie and really enjoyed it. As a horror comedy, it was very different than the Tetsuo movies (copies of which should be put in time capsules), and less intense than Tokyo Fist.

I suppose I need to re-watch it because I am confused on a couple basic points. Is Hiruko supposed to be invisible? In the subtitles I believe Heida mentioned this, and when he is terrorizing people in the school he is not seen (i.e. when running up and down hallways, and in the kitchen with the pots and pans moving about). Also, I Hiruko a different goblin than the goblin with the spider-like body with Tsukishima's head, or are they one and the same (after Hiruko takes her head?).

I have now seen Hiroku! It was pretty good I liked it anyway. Not the best, but definitely entertaining, and the push-bike factor makes it even better
