    Vampire flicks: your favourites?

I was having this discussion with V the other day, and I'd love to hear your recommendations of any vampire-themed movies you really love. It's a theme I particularly enjoy, being a bit of a vampophile, just for a bit of fun really :vamp:

I personally love the original Murnau Nosferatu, Hammer movies - Christopher Lee is definitely my favourite Dracula :D - and Eurotrash, anything by Jean Rollin and Jess (Vampyros Lesbos) Franco is aces in my book - my personal favourite being Rollin's Fascination, which features among many things, an ex-pr0n star naked save a black cloak and wielding a giant scythe, a dominatrix blood cult leader dressed as a Victorian governess, a dashing thief on the run from les gendarmes hiding out in a creepy old castle, and a host of vampire ladies dressed in nothing but suspiciously transparent chiffon nighties :vamp:

Other faves Chez Apple are The Hunger, Cronos, and I've got a copy of The Addiction on its way thanks to V  Still haven't watched my copy of early b&w French vampire movie Vampyr yet though...

How about you guys? Any tips for me? :evilbat:

  2. Scuz Knee-High Girl

I haven't seen many vampire movies.. Actually, the majority of horror movies I've seen have been either ghost, slasher or monster themed.

Let's see... I've seen Blade, which I liked for some reason, and Blade 2 which I hated for many reasons
Bram Stoker's Dracula, but I don't remember anything from it, except that it felt very long. Vampire's Kiss, at least I think that's the title. It had Nicolas Cage and I saw it many, many years ago, and only remember what happened to his character in the end :-P I recently saw From Dusk Till Dawn, which had my parents in great shock once the big twist came  Years ago I zapped between From Dusk Till Dawn 2 and The Eyes Of Laura Mars, but eventually I got stuck with the later one, cuz FDTD2 was horrible. Avoid!
And I've seen Fright Night, The Lost Boys... And the first half of John Carpenter's Vampires, but I apparently didn't like it, cuz I fell asleep. I don't think I've ever fallen asleep when watching a movie before 8O

I think that's it :-? I might have forgotten one or two, but I'll probably think of them later.
  3. Vertigo Guest

To recap and add to the ones we've discussed -

    The Addiction
    The Night Stalker
    Nosferatu
    The Hunger
    Vampyros Lesbos

Others include From Dusk Till Dawn, Fright Night, The Blade Trilogy and Vampires. Also any vampire movie that Christopher Lee looks sideways at - from his early Hammer appearances to his later role in Jess Franco's Count Dracula, most of the onscreen incarnations of Dracula as they all have at least one thing of merit - Frank Langella's eyes, Gary Oldman's make-up, Christopher Lee's overall presence etc and, although he has long since (unfairly) passed into characature, special note must be made for Bela Lugosi, whose delivery to Edward Van Sloan's Van Helsing of the line "For one who has not lived even a single lifetime, you are a wise man..." is nothing short of perfect.
  4. Mandi Apple The Acid Queen

I must be the only person in the world who doesn't like Blade and From Dusk Till Dawn - the former because I never really got the 'updated' sci-fi vamp thing very well, and the latter mainly because it has Juliette Lewis in it and if there's an actor I despise and loathe more than Juliette Lewis I can't honestly think of one. No, wait, yes I can: Courtney Love. :snigger:

Thanks for the recommends guys! :D
  5. Vertigo Guest

My one complaint about FDTD is that Ms Pouty-crap-actress-Lewis doesn't meet with a horrible demise.
  6. Scuz Knee-High Girl

Phew, I'm not the only one who dislikes (the word's not strong enough :help: ) Juliette Jewis. I wasn't going to watch From Dusk Till Dawn, since she was in it, but changed my mind. I did sort of watch the sequel after all, and there was nothing else on TV that night :-P
  7. Vertigo Guest

Yaay! And you're so right about the second movie - it's awful. The third movie - From Dusk Till Dawn 3: The Hangman's Daughter - is actually not too bad though. If anything it has to be praised for somehow managing to shoe-horn An Occurence at Owl Creek Bridge author Ambrose Bierce into the plot (played perfectly by Rodriguez/Tarantino favourite Michael Parks).
  8. Nensha1922 Guest

My absolute favourite still is the original Nosferatu, although it's by no means perfect I just adore it - and Max Schreck is the best vampire ever. Shadow of the Vampire focuses on a rumour that he was indeed a real vampire, I've seen this on tv a while ago and thought it was quite good actually.
I didn't know there were so many films before Murnau's, I always thought it to be the first. Is there anything you'd recommend to a fan of Murnau's classic, Mandi?

I pretty much share those feelings, except that Juliette Lewis didn't quite manage to ruin From Dusk Till Dawn for me, it still was great fun - although I would've loved to see her getting ripped apart by a bunch of vampires. There's just something about her face...
  9. Mandi Apple The Acid Queen

I would look into other b&w classics like Vampyr and Haxan if you've not already - Alex is the silent-movie buff of this family so he might have some more titles for you :D I didn't know there were lots before Murnau either so that's news to me :D

I'm glad it's not just me that hates her guts, I simply can't watch her - not just her face, or her weird head that looks like she's trying to grow a second head out of her forehead, it's her stupid dumbass thicko drawling s-l-o-w voice that annoys the crap out of me :snigger:
  10. Nensha1922 Guest

I haven't seen that many vampire movies and I've never heard of those two, but after a short view at their entries in the imdb, they sound just like my cup of tea. Thanks! Any more recommendations by Alex would be greatly appreciated :)
Could not express it any better :snigger:
  11. Vertigo Guest

And to think she's singing now n'all.

I just want to be silly for a second by posting this wonderful little but of art by Albin Grau -

Which reminds of me of another fave from my childhood...Salem's Lot

And this one especially for M.
  12. Yani The Observer

Let's see. Oldies first. I've seen some Christopher Lee vampireflick (gee, which one of them, there must be dozens :snigger: ). I'm pretty sure it was Dracula: Prince of Darkness. It's a Hammer-movie and I thought it was a fun late night movie. :-D Then there is Nosferatu, the Herzog's version, which rocked quite hard.

I've possibly seen Bram Stoker's Dracula but it been a long time since that and I don't have greatest memory about it. I should watch it again, along with Interview with the Vampire. Impressive casting on that one.

I really like From Dusk Till Dawn. Tom "Sex Machine" Savini and all... priceless. There's something about Juliette Lewis' acting that bothers me, but I don't hate her. I've seen only parts of the sequels and honestly, they don't seem too interesting. :-D If I really try hard the next time either of them is on telly I promise to *try* to watch them. At least then I can hate them if they are bad.

I'm a big fan of Blade movies. The first one is the best of them. It came in the right time and its take on vampires felt fresh. Wesley Snipes rocked. The second one... I hated it the first time I saw it. The second time went a bit better and on the third time I learned to enjoy it. Still, weaker than the 1st. Blade: Trinity is a total non-brainer. It's all about being macho as hell. And I enjoyed it. Hannibal's character was a fine addition. I hear they're now about to make either a TV-movie or a TV-mini-series to Blade-franchise. Might be cool... or not. Wesley Sniper is furious about the third movie and I have a feeling he might not wanna take part in the next thing.

I'm only scratching the surface. I'd like to remember all vampire movies I've seen. :snigger:
  13. Mandi Apple The Acid Queen

If that's what you call it :shudder2: She's trying to rip off a horrible mixture of Iggy Pop and Karen O and is not even a good enough actor to convince me that it's anything but meaningless, calculated drivel :raspberr:

If I may be so bold, Rotten Cotton have this pic on a rather nice t-shirt - I'm going to post the link, but I have to warn you from the off that you will be faced with a picture of a very, very large bottom in your face straightaway: http://www.rottencotton.com/shirts/retromonsters/retromonsters.htm

Great great great movie!!! Can't believe I forgot it!

Awwwww... I loves me a bit of Christopher Lee, he may be a bit of a cliche now but so imposing and commanding and masterful and... *trails off into drooling-type wibble* Thanks bro  Dracula AD1972 is a fabby movie too :D

EDIT: whoops, cut off a bit by mistake: meant to say I didn't really care for Bram Stoker's Dracula myself - I thought at the time it was a bit too cheesy and I don't like Winona Ryder at all, but maybe it deserves a re-watching...
  14. Vertigo Guest

Good grief! Arse-akimbo. There's nothing worse than a couple of sub-page 3 models pretending to be in a lesbian clinch.

OT for a second, I was out in Glasgow a while ago with one of my friends who is bi-sexual. We'd been spying on a couple of silly little girls in this pub who'd been doing the whole lesbian-chic thing all night for the benefit of the crowds (mostly drooling FHM-boys). My friend's as shifty-sly as me so she went across to them and started to chat them up. You couldn't see 'em for dust they legged it so fast. Idiots.

Anyway...back ontopic. Very nice t-shirt indeed. Me's considering a purchase.

If you can get passed Winona Ryder, Keanu Reeves and Anthony Hopkins all putting in career-low performances, it has some nice touches to it. Still a bit pants though.
  15. Mandi Apple The Acid Queen

Can't say I didn't warn you - the first thing you see is a great big faceful of arse, it tends to put you off buying a t-shirt a bit :D

I find it astonishing that there's even such a thing as lesbian-chic... I got the living sh!t kicked out of me at school for 'fessing up my bisexuality  What a pair of sad tw@ts

I went to see it in the cinema with a mate when it first came out and I was alternately bored and irritated, and also completely astonished by Keanu "Dick Van Dyke" Reeves and his godawful faux-English accent :snigger: I'll try it again but I'm not promising anything...
  16. Ganbachi Contemporary Caveman

I own up and confess to having not seen the original Nosferatu. I loved Blade first time I saw it and now I love it right up until the club scene finishes. As with all vampire topics I shall once again pronounce that burning fury, my infinite hatred, for hissing vampires. I hate it sooo much that I lose all coherence and make strange primate grunts to convey my distaste. Now it's probably just me but when the blonde vampire grabs the rubbish doctor woman and says 'I'm really going to enjoy this now' does that grammar sound right to you? It sounds wrong to me and makes my face explode with anger.

So my list would be -

Blade (until the end of the club scene)
    The Lost Boys
    Mr. Vampire
    Near Dark
Tales From The Crypt: Bordello Of Blood
  17. Yani The Observer

The Lost Boys is something I've been wanting to see for a long time. It sounds so cool! I knew I forgot a couple of movies too. If there's something I wouldn't recommend to anyone, it is Van Helsing. :puking:
Another new one, however, was a lot better compared to that pile of s*it. Underworld has its flaws, but succeeded in sucking me into the world the movie portrays. Nice work with such a small budget. I wonder how the sequel's going to be, I gather they're in the Middle Ages in that one. If we check what's going to be released soon, Uwe Boll's take on vampire movies is coming. Bloodrayne and Kristanna Loken. Looks bad and probably is that too. :snigger: Then there's always Kurt "Equilibrium" Wimmer's Ultraviolet (thread here) where my biggest concern is Milla Jovovich. But it's filmed in China and all, and the action should be great, so I'm still quite excited. I've heard people praising the mini-series Ultraviolet. I remember Mandi didn't like 'em though. :)

And how about Roman Polanski's The Fearless Vampire Killers? I haven't seen it, but I've heard it's fun. 8) I've seen John Carpenter's Vampires and I thought the movie was also fun. I might wanna see it again though.

If anime is also counted, I can recommend a few titles. Blood: The Last Vampire is a great, but sadly very short, vampire movie. Running less than 50min it leaves the viewer wanting to see more. And, finally, I've heard that they're planning to make something sort of a sequel to it. Yay! :-D One thing also about it, it looks awesome.

Both Vampire Hunter D movies should be worth seeing. The first one, made back in 1985, is something I've yet to see, but the sequel (I think it's a sequel) Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust is a great vampire movie. Hellsing is a quite short (I think ~12 episodes) anime series but I also wanna mention it. It's great.
  18. Midori no Saru Invoker of Azarak

I haven't seen it, but apparently it has a Jewish vampire, who is impervious to crosses...
  19. Yani The Observer

    Haha!
  20. Mandi Apple The Acid Queen

Mmm, I've seen it and thought it was quite funny, but then comedy vamps don't really appeal to me per se 8) As for the Jewish vampire bit - from this link:

"Cockney Jewish actor Alfie Bass plays Shagal, the innkeeper who is also (everyone in transylvania has got the bug) a vampire. Just when he’s closing in on Sharon Tate, she holds out a crucifix to stop him. "Boy, have you got the wrong vampire!" he tells her."

I seemed to remember it took me a long time to get into the idea of it but when I did, I enjoyed it. It was quite some while ago though that I saw it :D
