A few weeks ago I found and purchsed a copy of Koji Suzuki's Ring at the bookstore where I work. As soon as I started reading, I was absolutely hooked!!! It is so different from the movie in some parts that you really feel like you are being told a completely different story.

Have any of you had the chance to read the book? If so, share your thoughts here.

I liked the book. In many respects the movie is just like the book. The characters a bit different, but still very interesting. I love the in depth explanation they give on what Sadako really is and how she came about. Its definately worth picking up for those who havent gotten a chance to see it.

I found a copy at my local Borders in early June, so I snatched it up before someone else got the idea to instead. Finished it in 3 nights. It was really, really good. Sure, it was different than the movie . . . and somewhat a little better . . . but aren't the original books almost always better than their movie counterparts? ^^

I got the book the day it came out and I loved it.I read the entire thing over a weekend.I think I still prefer the movie over the book though.

This is little offtopic, but who cares

I don´t like read any books about films that have been made. I´m afraid that the book might be better or different than the film. That spoils the movie, and every time I see the same movie, I will think that this movie sucks, becouse it isn´t half as good as the book or it´s different. And I like to watch movies more than I like reading.

Almoust always, when I watch movie, I will imagine in my head point of view (or atmosphere) of the world, that movie try to tell. Books may change that atmosphere and that´s no good...

    Am I crazy or what ? 8O

Generally I find the "book is always better than the movie" rule applies. I have 2 exceptions. Hellraiser and Ring.

I enjoyed the Ring book thoroughly and I know I'll be re-reading it in the near future. But, I wouldn't call it a horror story. It's more of a mystery/suspense story with a supernatural edge (which is brilliant obviously) but it wasn't exactly gonna keep me from sleeping like the movie did!

The mangas are worth checking out too. If you can't read Japanese then (*warning! incoming plug!*) check out nensha.net, the home of the scanslation project that I'm helping with, we also need more translators *cough* :)

I didn't know quite what to make of the book, myself... I found it so completely different to the movie that I almost found myself applauding the movie script rewrite.

But in another way, I really appreciated the fresh look at the material from a totally different angle...

The only book I think which rates higher than the movie, for me, is the Battle Royale novel - although I'd love to read Sono Sion's original Suicide Circle novel too... I found BR in book form to be a complete revelation, infinitely more emotionally complex and rewarding than the movie... man, I really cried at the end

...although of course the movie kicks major ass too - don't think I'm putting the film down for a second - watched it with my mom on Saturday night and she was *totally* diggin' it too  My mom's soooo cool :D

I want to read both the Ring & Battle Royale book, but my parents won't let me buy them since I already own the movies  :2gunfire: But I don't listen to them.. much.. so I'll probably end up buying them anyway.

Most of the books I've read have been better than their movies. The only exception I can think of right now is "Jaws". Gosh, that book was sooo boring, took me forever to get through.

I really want to read Battle Royale before I see the movie, but my local bookstore doesn't have any in stock . . . If I want the book, I'll have to order it. -.-
  10. for me, the book being better than the movie rule almost always applies. Movies just can't grasp the depth of books, can't show the feeling and power that a good book always displays. Saying that, i've never read any books of asian films...(trying to get hold of the original Uzumaki manga is quite hard in this country) and my local bookshop told me i couldn't buy Ring till sometime in August. As soon as i can, however, i'll be buying it and reading it. I have heard that the book concentrates more on the scientific than the supernatural and i know its quite different. I am, however, looking forward to this new (and of course the original) view.

PS Mandi, you're in the UK...where'd u get ur copy?
  11. Mandi Apple The Acid Queen

Fwiw, we ordered our Ring and Battle Royale direct from Amazon.com, and whilst we had some problems (eg, them cancelling my order about 4 times without telling me), we did eventually get our copies... months after everyone else.

You can get Uzumaki now at Amazon.co.uk, and all three books/series are pick-uppable at Forbidden Planet, if you have one anywhere near you... I dunno if you can get the other two at Amazon.co.uk though...
  12. lemmer Brundlefly

i found the battle royale novel in my comic book store while searching for the manga, oddly enough. i haven't gotten around to reading it yet, but here's hoping it's better than the fairly terrible manga adaptation...
  13. Scuz Knee-High Girl

Maybe that's why I never got that movie my friend was going to send me last Christmas... I think I'll go bug them about it now, cuz I really want to see that movie again 8O
  14. they don't have Uzumaki at the Forbidden Planet in aberdeen, which really sucks. Its just that i prefer to buy from shops (not online) where possible to save my poor overdraft and i was wondering if it was a shop that you'd got it from. thanks anyway! (speaking of abusing my overdraft, i've just ordered Whispering Corridors from Ebay - hope its good!)

You could, I guess, ask them to order it for you - our local one (Bristol) is quite good about things like that - in fact, they're very accommodating. They even let me buy one of their Living Dead Dolls minis right out of the window display a week before they were due to go onsale! Bless 'em
  16. i mentioned Junjio Ito manga there before and the girl looked like i was asking to buy rainbow coloured poodles (which would be soooo cool...) but i shall ask again next time i'm in town coz i REALLY wanna get it seing as i LOVE the film so much! and yey for living dead dolls! i only have 2, but i looove them!

I got Battle Royale a week or so ago but I haven't been able to start it yet.I might just leave it until I go on vacation in a few weeks and read it then.

Ringu: The Book and Battle Royale: The Book interests me very much. Usually I'm not really much into books but these have to be bought some day. I just don't like to rush into things :)

i was kind of apprehensive buying the book? i heard the translation was a bit off? but since u guys read it i might as well get it XD

i read the battle royale book it was great..i loved how the author gave a back story to every character....u end up getting a greater sense of each one even when they die.....
    poor shinji >.<!!

has anyone read the br manga? i think the character designs are kinda odd Oo but the story is a bit different than from the movie and book...
