Phone (2010) Well, after years in development hell it looks like the remake of Byeong-ki Ahn's Phone is finally on track. According to UHM, the film is slated for a summer 2010 release with filming starting this fall. In true Shimizu style, Byeong-ki Ahn will be remaking his own film and shooting on location in the country of origin, namely South Korea. It is to be a joint US-SK production with the Korean company Mirovision and the US company Imprint. Myself, I've got mixed feelings. I didn't think the original was anything special, so I don't have to worry about this remake ruining my perception of it. Hopefully the studio doesn't butcher Byeong-ki's vision, though, because the studios nowadays really have no idea what they're doing. Who knows, maybe if this remake does well the previously planned Apt. remake will get going again. Maybe we'd even see a redo of Gawi. On an unrelated note, how many people do you think will see the trailer and assume it's a sequel to One Missed Call?
A lot, probably - and the frosty reception that One Missed Call received probably won't entice very many people to Phone if they think it's similar or part of the same franchise. Me, I also had mixed feelings about the film - some of it worked, some of it didn't, and I wasn't really that scared by it. Chances are this'll be remade as a jumpy-horror, as most american remakes tend to be. Guess we'll need to wait and see but I'm not going out of my way to see this I reckon.
Aw... hell to the nu-uh! I thought US studios were past Asian remakes? Definitely going to be compared to One Missed Call (which was underviewed to begin with!) Why do they even bother? What's next? Suicide Circle with The Pussycat Dolls causing everyone to commit suicide (even more than their music already does)?
Y'know, if the film does get made, I won't be surprised if they do a DTV sequel to the American One Missed Call to coincide with the release of the new Phone. It seems to be a trend now, with horror movies (including remakes) that underperformed at the box office getting DVD sequels. Look at Boogeyman, Pulse, The Grudge, The Messengers... A quick, cheap One Missed Call 2 would seem to be a good way to leech off some of the possible anticipation for Phone and make some money from the confused/impatient populace. And me, because I'd totally buy it
