Absolutely love this film. Saw it on a flight yesterday and just got completely taken in by it. The cinematography and editing is incredible, creating a dream-like hypnosis that surrounds you dispensing an incredible amount of information while also being visually flawless. The film constantly confronts you with extreme emotions and devastating plot turns that force you into sadness, anger, sympathy and regret all at once, all the while shot in a somewhat detached style that for me just made the film all the more unique and powerful. There's no catharsis here, just a head first plunge into the darker recesses of humanity. A moral minefield, performances by the cast are uniformly excellent with Takako Matsu ice-cold and as damaged as they come as the grief stricken teacher who seeks revenge for the murder of her daughter. I can't recommend this film enough, its shot right up to become one of my favourite films this year.
I agree, ghevans. Honestly this film was nothing short of brilliance. I was fortunate enough to watch it earlier this week. The way the story unfolds is amazing. I was hooked even during the first few minutes, and after the thirty minute mark I thought, where is this gonna go now? And boy did it GO. The finale was really great to watch, finally some special effects used to benefit the story! Great piece of cinema, definitely recommended to all movie fans.
I am going to give a 3rd BIG THUMBS UP for Confessions! It's debatable on wether Confessions steals the Revenge Movie Crown from Oldboy, but could be by a little bit, just a little bit. One thing is for sure Takako Matsu makes the Death Wish series (no disrespect to Charles Bronson) look like child's play. Although, be forewarned, this movie is emotionally draining & dark. Lastly, I couldn't wait for the Japanese DVD so I bought the 0 region Hong Kong version which surprisingly had great subtitles (if you can read fairly fast).
