Japanese photography They have some good photographers in Japan, it seems - they've got some great stuff to photograph, that's for sure. I found this one in Black and White Photography magazine - Hiroshi Watanabe... http://www.hiroshiwatanabe.com/HW website Folder/Pages/Content.html I particularly like his photos of the Kabuki actors.
Those photos are great - I really like the Kabuki pics too, and the masks My favourite Japanese photographer is Ryuji Miyamoto, who specialises in pictures of destroyed buildings: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Ryuji-Miyam...TF8&coliid=I1TDPWVGA8EN89&colid=1PXESUEL0IHKQ is a book of his work at Amazon http://www.taronasugallery.com/art/ryuji-miyamoto/work_e.html - gorgeous! http://www.jameskelly.com/miya/miya.html And erotic photographer Ken'ichi Murata WHOSE PHOTOS ARE DEFINITELY NOT SAFE FOR WORK - over 18's only please 'cos they verge on the super pr0nographic http://murata.main.jp/english_profile.htm http://mondobizzarro.net/gallery/artists/ken-ichi_murata.php http://www.amazon.co.uk/Japanese-Princess-Ken-ichi-Murata/dp/393402033X - book of his work at Amazon Michiko Kon is a really interesting surrealist photographer - I love her work: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Michiko-Kon...6028413?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1187186550&sr=8-4 http://www.multiply.org/plural/02/scrawl.kon.html http://www.taipeitimes.com/News/feat/archives/2002/12/29/189072 This Wikipedia page might also give a good idea of some new Japanese photographers to look into: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Society_of_Photography_Award
Thanks for all those links Mandi - I'll enjoy looking through those. At first glance, Ryuji Miyamoto looks right up my street. Edit - yes those are all excellent! Thanks!
One site definitly worth watching is this one http://home.f01.itscom.net/spiral/research.html *hint; great to use as screensaver by saving them in "my pictures" Really like abandoned building pic's anyway
Typical (wannabe) hipster choice is Araki: http://www.eyesencia.com/araki_eyesencia.html Warning: some pics in link may not be appropriate for office/work viewing.
I'm guessing this is relevant to this cat - I spotted this book come up on Jbox and I simply had to add it, since it combines two of my favourite subjects, abandoned creepy places and Japan http://www.jbox.com/PRODUCT/PHS768 It looks absolutely extraordinary, I think I'll be picking this up when I have some cash
I would love to have such a book if I could afford it right now (bought too many old cameras recently to buy books on photography) but I do love the aesthetics of abandoned buildings - they can be spooky, elegiac, and sublime, and possibly remind us of the fleeting nature of things. If you like this kind of image - go onto flickr and search for groups on "urban exploration." - there are loads of great images there.
I just discovered the work of an amazing Japanese photographer, Daikichi Amano - his photographs are definitely NOT SAFE FOR WORK (and frankly, some of them aren't safe for life, either  ), but they are just incredible http://www.daikichiamano.com/ http://www.mondobizzarro.net/gallery/artists/daikichi_amano.php http://www.myspace.com/daikichiamano
