Here's a strange forum-topic post for this board.

I wrote something up about this yesterday on my site. I'm a little confused about the whole "Feel" title that's going around because looking at the magazine scans I can't find it. I see "Kyôfu Taikan: Ju-on" written in kanji but the only place i see "feel" is up in the corner by the company info. I wonder if the original source has some inside information on what the English title will be or if it's just been lost in translation and then aggregated around.

    Interesting.

I had always wondered that, with the massive hype surrounding the Ju-On franchise a few years back, whether they would translate it to a game. It seems a little mis-timed now that the franchise is falling increasingly on bad review scores, but it looks like quite an interesting prospect - no doubt chosen for the Wii solely due to the ability to use the remote to move the torch around...

Still, if it's anything like the Project Zero/ Fatal Frame series (which, looking at the screens, it reminds me the most of), then it could be quite scary. I'm just not sure how exactly the story will translate to a game - something tells me that a combat-heavy Ju-On game wouldn't exactly be fitting given the source material. I'll be keeping an eye on this one... Thanks for the info, Alex! :D

That's exactly the way I thought it would go too, down the Project Zero route - so what would be the point of that? There are already several games which are very similar in look, feel (no pun intended) and plot, including the entire PZ/FF series, Forbidden Siren and more obscure titles like Kuon as well...

Like John, I think this game is about 5 years out of date, not only due to the waning popularity of Juon but also simply because it's already been done, pretty much  Unless Shimizu can come up with something totally left-field, then I don't really see it.

Could be interesting if he was to work in some more Japanese mythology connected to the Saekis or to haunted houses in general, or turn part of it into curse-breaking puzzles or somesuch... gah, I dunno  Again, like John, I can't quite see it being a FPS title
  5. johnmcf2005 Persona User

Thing is, I just can't see how any type of combat would fit into the Mythos whatsoever. Whenever people were killed by the curse in the movies, it was because it snuck up on them and took them by surprise, or paralysed them with fear. The whole point was that it was never a fight - these people just couldn't win no matter what...

I can't imagine it being like PZ/FF, as this would be both a rip off and not in fitting with the story - The Juon films didn't involve an exorcising camera... Similarly, I can't even imagine it being like Forbidden Siren - the whole bpoint of that was that the villagers had transformed into demons, and you had to hide from them. There was a stealth element involved because they were physical opponents. Juon involved purely spiritual antagonists, ones that could not be hidden from.

But like Mandi, I think that if this were to be more of a horror adventure, with puzzles to solve, etc, then it could be very interesting indeed. I just hope it doesn't get too gimmicky with the Wii Remote, as this game will no doubt be acting as my substituion for PZ4 on the Wii, which, it has been announced, is NOT coming to Europe. :(

Hmm - that definitely does look pretty promising. Looks like playing it alone on a dark night would be pretty darn creepy- I'd still like to know more about the game mechanics - sure, we saw in the video that the spirits can appear at certain points, but are they just scripted scares, or will we then have to react and escape, etc.?

I'm just hoping they don't bring combat into this - Silent Hill's new outing is set to get rid of it and I think that makes it sound genuinely quite scary. This game would certainly not benefit from the ability to fight and I certainly hope the developers realise this.

One other negative I feel I kinda have to point out is that I am really skeptical about this series making it to the UK.... If PZ4 can't make it to our region, then does an even more obscure game like this have a chance? I know that the Grudge was popular here a few years back - but something tells me that the interest may have died down a little too much. Just have to wait and see, I suppose.
  8. When I first saw the trailer, I had thought that it looked very very similar to Forbidden Siren. And when I showed it to a friend of mine, she thought it was Siren as well after watching the first few seconds of the trailer. Anyway, I was thinking that maybe this will be like Clock Tower 3, where your character has to run away from the enemy because they have no weapons. A panic meter might be used as well; in Clock Tower 3, when the panic meter goes all the way up, your character runs insanely and it's hard to control them, usually resulting in a game over because the enemy catches up and you can't do certain things.

However, Clock Tower 3 has "holy water" which can sting the enemy, giving you a chance to run. What about this game? And for boss battles in CT, you get a bow and arrow. How would you do that in Ju On? Maybe your character dies in the end, and the title "Feel" just means that while playing, you'll get a feel of what it's like being cursed, etc?

There are actually a fair number of horror titles that force the player to flee, and very few of them (ie, Clock Tower 3) allow the player to strike back at their pursuer in an effective way. A more recent example of this type of game would be Penumbra: Black Plague, wherein you were forced to run, hide, and utilize select items in order to avoid enemies, not necessarily harm them. (Overture isn't mentioned because you do have weapons that you can use against enemies.)

Penumbra pulled it off, so I can see Ju-on pulling it off as well. It certainly doesn't strike me as looking terribly much like Siren; beyond the obvious difference in perspective (first vs. third), Siren had a world where enemies were very much active. From what I've seen of Ju-on, Kayako and Toshio only seem to show up when the player sets off some sort of invisible cue.

Actually, I would be quite surprised if this game was anything other than a steamy pile. I just don’t see the point in making a game based on these movies and at such an odd time in the franchise’s history…who really cares that much about Ju-on these days? Okay, so maybe some hardcore people would. Personally, I like the Ju-on series and own the first Japanese movie along with the television series. I might have thought this game was cool back then but the whole thing is just like so five years ago now. We’ve moved on!

My friend has a Wii though so maybe some day if I ever see it in the bargain bins at Walmart, I'll pick it up.

Feel - Takashi Shimizu's Juon game

Hey, I don't know if you guys have heard of this or not, I only found out about it last night. They have a Ju-On game made for the Wii for the 10th anniversary of the movie, it came out in Japan on July 30th, and is expected out October in NA.
    Here's a trailer for it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PPylVVFGlJQ
It has a really cool concept, where it scores you on how much you jump and get scared, it makes me want to get a Wii now just for this. Here's what EbGames site says:
    • Unique Haunted House Simulator – Unlike any other product on Wii, this game foregoes slow-paced story elements to offer immediate gratification with scare after scare.
    • Easy to Use Controls Allow Anyone to Play – Use the Wii Remote as a flashlight, exploring dark corners and creepy environments. Move forward and take actions with the press of a single button. It’s fun to get scared, but even more fun passing the controller to someone else and watching them jump!
    • Second-Player Functionality to Satisfy the Evil in All of Us – While a friend is playing the game, grab the second controller and push any button to instantly activate terrifying on-screen events to have that player hate you forever.
    • Based on the Hit Horror Movie, The Grudge – This title is based on JU-ON, the Japanese inspiration for the hit horror film, The Grudge, with the original director, Takashi Shimizu, acting as a consultant on game development.

A little update on this- it seems that Ju-On: The Grudge (The international title for Feel) will be getting a release in both the US and in Europe, which I have to admit is rather surprising. What's more surprising, is just how bad the box art is:

    http://www.destructoid.com/ju-on-s-sh-tty-european-box-art-147625.phtml

I mean, really? Why not just have the same cover for both versions? I think people will be more inclined to pick up a game and look at it if the cover art actually relates to the game's content. That, and the fact that many people wil recognise Kayako from the movies. No-one's going to recognise some random woman behind a couch.

I can already see this getting a pretty muted reception here in Europe. Maybe I'll be wrong, who knows? I'm not sure myself if I'm going to buy it - I'll be wating to see some reviews first.

    WTF?!?!? 8O

Genuinely, what are these people trying to do, shoot themselves in the foot repeatedly? Don't they want to sell any copies of this game, or what? I'm literally speechless - just waving my arms around in the air like a nutjob at the sheer stupidity of it all

See, the cover of the US release makes me actually slightly more interested in buying it than I would normally be - that's the idea behind cover artwork, marketing folks, just in case you didn't understand that or something :snigger: However, a picture of some dumb-looking doofus peeking out from behind her couch like an old granny trying to avoid double-glazing salesmen is just... inexplicable :dizzy:

 I too simply cannot fathom what was going through their heads when they came up with that lazy piece of rubbish. What mystifies me also is the tagline - A Fright Simulator or A Haunted House Simulator - these seem stupid to me. You don't want your survival horror games to be simulators, do you? Something about that word, to me, just takes away any kind of immersion I'd expect from the game already.

But what really confuses me is how THIS game gets a release outside of Japan, and Fatal Frame/Project Zero 4 doesn't!!!??? :dizzy:

    Good God almighty.

That cover and tag line make it sound like one of those dirt cheap suckfest games that basically rip off a more popular franchise.

Ju-On: The Grudge "Haunted House Simulator"

    Well, THIS should be interesting...

This is a pretty terrible ad, IMO. I found it in my new issue of GamePro. Apparently the Sony-licensed film is getting a Nintendo exclusive game...

The ad makes some bold claims. I'm pretty sure I'm not going to cry. It's got an outdated plug for The Grudge on DVD (I'd assume they'd use it to promote the more recent re-release on Blu-ray, or at least The Grudge 3) and one tiny screenshot, showing Kayako lurching towards the screen.

There's no mention of a release date, and most of the faces in the background look totally unscared.

    Here's the scan:

EDIT: I hope nobody's too intrigued by the site - it's just a placeholder page right now.
  17. It's been forever since I've played a good survival horror game. This might be a good placeholder, at least.

    Oh dear.

XSEED just can't seem to ever make a good impression when they present their game, be it the yawn-tastic Euro box art, or this.... interesting delivery:

    http://www.destructoid.com/ju-on-press-mailer-is-a-gross-hairy-bloody-wad-of-wtf-152188.phtml

Based on what I've read on the game, including the review scores from Japanese gaming mag Famitsu, I doubt I'll be picking this one up any time soon. Shame - the idea sounded a little interesting to me initially, but like I said back when this was announced, I think they decided to make this game about 5 years too late.

And to think Fatal Frame 4 never made it out of Japan... :(

I'm lulzing at one of the comments on that page, in regards to a key being given out as part of the dodgy press pack:

 Need we go on? I think not
