Big Bang Love, Juvenile A / 4.6 Billion Years of Love / 46-okunen no koi (Miike,2006)

I don't know much about this since I only just turned it up - it's the latest Miike offering and stars Ryuhei Matsuda, Tadanobu Asano and Masanobu Ando (the fangirls will explode over this one  ) as well as my beloved Ryo Ishibashi) :D

It sounds really interesting, from a user comment at IMDB:

And the synopsis is given thusly:

There's a review of this Miike offering here.
It's got Masanobu Ando, Ryuhei Matsuda, Renji and Ryo Ishibashi, and Kenichi Endo. IMDb says Tadanobu Asano's in it, too.
I think this looks terribly interesting. I'd love to make it to Toronto for the screening at the TIFF.
Anyone know anything else about it?

Does look very very interesting. If there's positive reviews of it and I can get it cheap I might check it out....

I would totally probably pay more than thirty bucks for this, on intrigue alone. This is quite a jam, I think.
  5. Mandi Apple The Acid Queen

Seriously, this is the sort of movie which I think on names alone will be worth sticking the cash down for. Can't see it making it to DVD for awhile though since it's such a new title

Well I would never possibly maybe under any circumstances endorse any illegal distribution means as a way of getting a copy of this film. That would be tres awful, I say. Who would do that? The nerve. :shake:

Honestly though, I'm really intrigued by it. Looking up more about it on these here internets, and seeing the critical response, makes me think this could be a good one. And I was super worried after the past year or so that the "extreme" market had begun to scrape the bottom of the barrell. And the title! Oh my gosh. It's so Kubrick I could die. I love it to death, and I haven't even seen it.

I'm going to try to get up to Toronto to see this at the Toronto International Film Festival...

Anyone has seen this movie yet? I bought it last month, and although it's top notch Miike weirdness and cinematography - the set is very claustrophobic for the most part and it's almost as if the film was acted out on stage - but to say I'm a little confused of Just What The Hell Is Going On is an understatement! There are no subtitles, so fact that I don't understand very much Japanese doesn't help much either :(

I've seen a trailer on youtube etc and just the modern dance part alone made me desperate to watch it, god knows how I will get hold of it and of course Mr. Ando's in it (fangirl squeeing) Anything by Miike is always worth a look in my opinion.

Ooh and it's also called Big Band Love Juvenille a or something in English, how random is that.

Big Bang Love, Juvenile A (Miike) 2006

"BIG BANG LOVE joins GOZU and IZO in the Miike pantheon of hard-edged ontological essays pushing at the limit of representation."
    -Nathan Lee (The Village Voice)

GOZU is probably my second favorite Miike movie after AUDITION, but IZO was a real mess in my opinion. On the cover Miike himelf calls BIG BANG LOVE "my masterpiece" which I find unsettling.

I haven't seen this yet, just got the DVD in the mail today. Anyone seen it? It's appeared in some festivals, and the DVD release in the US is a 2-disc set... and I had never heard of it before...
  11. I have the italian dvd and the movie is really good.
I admit that i dont understand the end of the movie (as usual with some Miike's works) but the story is really interesting and well-acted.
It's really different from others Miike's flicks..but you can see his "hand". :)

I really liked the movie, it's very beautiful and inspirational. One of my favourites next to Izo.
I believe there's a good chance you'll like it, even though you didn't like Izo.

    Thanks Alex...sorry for the hassle!

I watched the movie last night. It was quite a headtrip, honestly.

Wrapped up into a confusing storytelling manner, there's this small prison that's isolated from the rest of the world, where next to it is a giant pyramid and a rocketship. An inmate (Ryuhei Matsuda) is found strangling another inmate (Masanobu Ando), and he confesses to it, yet there are rope marks leading to questioning who actually killed him. What insues after is (I think :ennuie:) a retelling of what happened before the murder and how it explains why the inmate was killed. Oh yeah, and an interpretive exploration of manhood and um... more things I didn't get.

To be quite honest, I really don't know what Miike was trying to say here. Something about isolation, perhaps his own exploration of homoeroticism and violence... I'm not sure. Still, I thought it was really interesting, and I did enjoy it. It works as one of those strange, ambiguously complex sort of art films which I like so much- the sets, imagery and colors are absolutely beautiful and have a real dreamlike quality about them. On top of that, the acting is very good, and it's probably just me but Matsuda and Ando are perfectly cast for this sort of movie, with enough homoeroticism to fullfill any fangirl (or guys) dreams  The ending them song is really nice too.

It's a confusing, strange philosophical story which I think I'll need to watch a couple more times to make some sense out of, but it's quite an amazing movie nonetheless. I highly recommend it, especially to those arthouse fans.

I just recently watched this film and the visual is still in my head. My opinion is that this is one of greatest films I have seen. I'm a bit confuse on the storyline but I like the dialogue and the way the film was composed.
  16. ghevans Yeah, you can fly!

This film has been sitting on my shelf for way too long, I'm gonna have to give it a spin at some time. It's become part of a bunch of films that I've waited too long for and the anticipation has gone so high that there's a fear that it wont fullfill.

Maybe this weekend I'll finally get round to watching this, The Fountain, Zodiac and I'm A Cyborg. On paper its like I have the best weekend of film watching ahead of me for some time.
