the new issue of one of my favourite magazines, "Asian Cult Cinema", will be shipping in the next few weeks. Featuring in issue 41 - Max Allan Collins talks about Charlie Chan and how the Chan movies have become victims of a "politically correct" backlash. Ric Meyers slams Jackie Chan's MEDALLION, saying "Is it the worst Jackie Chan film ever? Is it worse than THE TUXEDO? I think so, because at least TUXEDO was well made." You'll also find a wide variety of articles, ranging from the Shaw Bros' COME DRINK WITH ME to the gory Korean thriller H, the films of Higuchinsky (UZUMAKI, LONG DREAM, TOKYO 10+1) to those of Ryuhei Kitamura (VERSUS, ARAGAMI, DOWN TO HELL). Dr Stan Glick has a superb article on the "Revenge Series at Columbia University" and Graham Lewis gives five reasons why Korean films kick ass. Besides all that... there are two great interviews: 1. director Ronnie Yu talks about his latest, FREDDIE vs. JASON, and his earlier "bride" movies (BRIDE WITH WHITE HAIR and BRIDE OF CHUCKY); and 2. action starlet JADE LEUNG shares her intimate secrets while recapping her career from BLACK CAT to PHANTOM OF SNAKE. Copies are available from all Borders bookstores or online at www.asiancult.com Thanks to Asian Cult Cinema Editor in Chief Tom Weisser for the advance info.
Thanks for the recommendation V - the Higuchinsky article sounds worth the price of the 'zine alone 8)
I was actually going to highlight that bit in green for your benefit..... Glad to be of service M *does a wee bow*
The next issue of ACC (# 42 shipping in late January) will feature an interview with Chiaki Kuriyama along with some nice pics for all you folks who just cant get enough of her. Ten bucks says the interview is interupted by at least one bout of annoyingly school-girlish giggling.....
The new issue (#42) is now on sale and includes a very interesting interview with Takeshi Kitano that covers, amongst other things, the new "Zatoichi" movie (rumours that ghevans has just ordered 16 copies of ACC had not been proved as of this writing), an interview with Chiaki Kuriyama (yawn), an excellent "Kwaidan" retrospective and a quick kick at the apparent 'anti-American sentiment' of "Battle Royale 2". There are also articles on Anita Mui and the ever-present (it seems) Miike Takashi. Enjoy.
Yeah, it's a shame that they offer that kinda thing too. When they say they cover all extremes of asian 'cult' cinema they mean it. But believe me, they're not as bad as they used to be - it was only a few years ago that they were punting the Nikkatsu 'Pink' movies and the thoroughly despicable "Rapeman" series through the site and in the magazine. But I think all that stopped, either as a rights issue or on obscenity grounds, I can't remember which. But there are still the odd few articles on the more dubious corners of asian cinema that crop up every now and again but they're pretty much kept to a minimum. The new issue features articles on BR 2, The Dead or Alive trilogy, Johnnie To's PTU and yet another article on Japanese horror.
I don't mind hentai, actually... I find it infinitely less offensive than the gazillion p0rn ad pop-ups you get visiting some of the more worryingly dank and sleazy corners of the Net... <shrugs>
sorry about that, I can see why that may have sounded snobbish. I dont really think it is a bad thing at all, it is more of something on a personal level that bothers me about it (hentai, not pornography). Since that is the case, I can go freely around the site without hentai being shoved in my face (like popups as you mentioned)
Oh gosh, not at all, not at all I was just adding my opinion 'cos I find it so less harsh than all the sickmaking stuff you see popping up left right and centre on some sites... yuck :ennuie:
And as long as you don't take a lot of it too seriously, some of it is actually kinda hilarious. "Ooh, ah think ah'm gonna get mah groove on with some green tentacles...ooh baby!".
